Or What to Drink by the Pool…
The Mediterranean. Ancient centre of the world. Cloudless skies over an undulating turquoise sea. A bracing morning dip in the salty brine screams for something fresh and crisp to drink when back on terra firma. Something festive, as we are on holiday, but not too strong, as it is still early in the day and we wish to drink intelligently above all.
I leave the gorgeous girls basking by the pool in the midday sun and scan the kitchen for inspiration. A forlorn slice of green melon left over from breakfast captures my imagination. Into the blender with ice it goes. Whoops, the blender motor has expired despite its healthy mediterranean diet! Never mind, a basic hand blender comes to the rescue. I reach for dry white Vermouth next, as its grape base and aromatic botanicals will pair beautifully with the melon. Likewise I added a good aromatic gin to make essentially a Martini base, but used half measures so as to keep the alcoholic content low. I also added a few drops of elderflower cordial to round out the melon flavour. Bliss.
Melon Madness for 4 people
500g chunked green melon, cold from fridge
300g ice, crushed or small cubes
60ml dry white vermouth
20ml elderflower cordial
blitz in a blender or use a hand blender, garnish with a fine slice of lime
